About the program
This initiative aims to ensure that individual trust accounts held for persons who have become eligible to receive their money are paid out as quickly as possible, reducing the number of trust accounts held by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
Many persons are unaware that ISC is holding a trust account on their behalf. In situations where those persons have reached the age of majority in the province, territory or state where they live and haven't yet collected their money, ISC will continue to hold their money in a trust account until they can be contacted and paid.
The initiative includes:
- establishing contact with beneficiaries through:
- mail-outs
- phone calls
- emails
- working with First Nation offices
- assessing applications for payouts
- processing payments to beneficiaries
- replying to enquiries relating to individual trust accounts
If contact information is available for adults on whose behalf a trust account is being held, ISC will send them a letter and a request for payout form. The letter only mentions that they may have a trust account and asks that they complete and return the request for payout form. If you think ISC is holding a trust account on your behalf and you haven't received a letter, contact Public enquiries.
ISC also contacts registration administrators in First Nation offices to provide letters and request for payout forms for distribution to members who have reached the age of majority in the province, territory or state where they live and on whose behalf ISC is holding a trust account.
